Going on tilt

Hello, I’m Marilyn Castro, a professional poker player. In this blog I want to share some of the tips and advice, based on my own experience. Hope this information will be useful for you and let you improve your gambling skills.

Don't think the low-limit novice has a monopoly on bad play. There is plenty of it in the higher-limit games, even some by professional players. Time after time, I see people who should know better—often, people who do know better—making fundamental errors. Note that these types of errors are the ones that are the most detrimental to your bankroll. Here are what may be the three most frequent and damaging mistakes in poker.

Going on tilt. This expression refers to going out of control because you are losing. Many players are good front-runners. It is easier to play well when you are running a little lucky. The real test of discipline is how you play when losing, especially if longshot hands are cashing against you. It is tempting to say, "I'll give them a dose of their own medicine," and play a trashy hand. The likely result is to dig yourself a hole too big to get out of. The way to avoid steaming is to say to yourself, "The cards are going to turn eventually; maybe real soon. If I don't get stuck too much, I can probably get out of this trap."
